Le quintet parisien En Attendant Ana a ébloui depuis le premier jour. Depuis les tensions sourdes de leur EP de 2016 Songs From The Cave, jusqu'au premier album Lost & Found (2018 - Buddy records, Montagne Sacrée et Trouble in Mind), en passant par les refrains étincelants de Juillet (2020 - Trouble in Mind), sorti juste avant que le monde ne s'effondre autour de nous, et qui représentait la renaissance du groupe et l'affirmation la plus pure de ses ambitions musicales… jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Principia est le troisième album du groupe et, sans aucun doute, leur meilleur à ce jour.
La voix de Margaux Bouchaudon, leader du groupe auteure et principale compositrice, est le point d'ancrage de nombreuses chansons de Principia, sa voix cristalline résonnant comme une cloche tandis que le groupe se pâme et se balance sous elle. Les chansons de Principia posent un regard résigné et amer sur l’état des choses. Elles remettent en question notre perception des autres, celle qu'ils ont de nous et enfin celle que nous avons de nous-mêmes dans une société où l'individu est roi et le groupe est oublié. À ses côtés, le guitariste Maxence Tomasso semble plus « à sa place » sur ces morceaux, son jeu de guitare est précis, sans esbroufe et glisse presque sans effort toujours au service de la chanson. Vincent Hivert (anciennement leur ingénieur du son) a un jeu de basse souple et caoutchouteux, qui rebondit autour et à travers des mélodies sur un rythme enivrant, tirant avec lui le swing métronomique du batteur Adrien Pollin. L'arme secrète du groupe, la trompette et le saxophone de la multi-instrumentiste Camille Fréchou sont plus présents et mieux intégrés aux arrangements, ajoutant une nouvelle couche de sophistication à la pop indé déjà débonnaire du groupe. Les harmonies béatifiques de Camille s’ajoutent aux phrases légères de Margaux, dans un résultat parfois exaltant, parfois mélancolique. Margaux déclare : "L'un des points les plus importants sur lequel nous avons essayé de nous concentrer était la place accordée à chaque instrument. Pour la première fois, nous avons retiré des parties, nous avons fait attention à ne pas jouer tous et toutes en même temps et je pense que le résultat est un album beaucoup plus léger dans lequel chaque musicien a une place et un moment spécifiques".

Mais cet album est aussi le premier à avoir été entièrement façonné par le groupe, de la conception à la production. La rencontre de Vincent Hivert et Margaux Bouchaudon a donné naissance à un duo où les aspects techniques et artistiques se sont entremêlés dès le début de sa conception. En plus de remodeler la dynamique du groupe, Vincent Hivert a pu penser en tant que musicien et producteur dès les première phases de travail sur les démos de Margaux Bouchaudon, apportant une nouvelle dimension à leur musique. Tous deux ont enregistré et mixé l'album ensemble, mettant en commun leurs références, leurs envies et leurs objectifs artistiques.

Principia est un grand pas en avant sans pour autant sacrifier les éléments qui rendent le groupe unique. Les clins d'œil à la pop française (actuelle et classique) sont toujours présents, et le penchant du groupe pour l'indie pop anglo-saxonne des années 90 (pensez à Electrelane, Stereolab, American Analog Set) résonne toujours, mais il y a un air de - osons le dire - maturité dans les dix chansons de Principia. Le groupe s'est toujours senti un peu en dehors et en avance sur son temps, mais des morceaux comme Wonder, The Cutoff et Same Old Story sont cinématographiques et romantiques, et donnent l'impression d'être la prochaine étape d'un groupe déjà excellent.
