Madrugada

Madrugada jouent et se jouent des oxymores : avec eux, l’aube est crépusculaire, le froid et l’aridité scandinaves brûlent de mille feux, la mort est source de vie.
Formés au milieu des années 90, ils ont sorti cinq albums empreints d’une classe, d’une élégance et d’une majesté que l’on avait jusqu’alors rarement trouvées ailleurs que chez les Tindersticks et Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
Mais en 2008, le décès de leur guitariste marque la fin de leur glorieuse aventure.
Cependant le deuil ne vaincra pas : le groupe se reforme en 2019 avec ses trois membres originels pour une tournée célébrant le 20ème anniversaire de leur premier album, “Industrial Silence”.
L’épopée est relancée – leur nouveau disque, “Chimes at Midnight”, sorti il y a quelques mois, confirme que dans la catégorie rock hanté et fiévreux, Madrugada tutoient définitivement les sommets.

Majestic. Magnificent. Epic. These are words that are hard to avoid when describing one of Norway’s greatest artists, Madrugada.
Madrugada was at their height when they stopped in 2008. But their 11 year absence from the spotlight only strengthened their status such that when the three living original members reunited in 2019 to honour their debut album Industrial Silence, they were bigger than ever. Both at home and abroad. The tour they laid out in 2019 was a triumphant processional with sold out shows all over Norway and abroad including festivals and long series of concerts on the continent and in many cases selling double or triple the capacities than their previous years.
Madrugada has always maintained their own sonic landscape throughout the years. Not only do they have one of Norways, dare we say one of the planets best vocalists in Sivert Høyem, but the strong signature of the band, both sonically and visually in such a a league of their own, that it transcends both generations, genres and trends.
One can never go wrong with this band. Along with long string of awards, from their six studio albums, one live album, a slew of singles and EP’s, all have reached either gold or platinum status.
In 2021 Madrugada released “Chimes at Midnight”, which according to the band was “born from an exceptionally good mood”. The album is characterised by the inspired songwriting work within the group. The reception of the new album was also impeccable, and was poignantly described by NRK as "a redemptive catharsis" after many years of silence". This abundance joy of playing music from a potent band that still has a lot to say also placed high on the charts in Norway, Greece, Germany and Switzerland.
The album was followed up by two evenings in Oslo Spektrum as one of the first bands to perform a large scale concert after the pandemic, along with announcing a giant stadium concert at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, autumn 2022. “Chimes at Midnight”, was released together with the magnificently ambitious Vesterålen Project, where the band filmed a number of new and old songs live
throughout their home region of Vesterålen, directed and documented by filmmaker Eivind Holmboe.
Now, Madrugada is ready for a new round to celebrate their new album and a reopening of stages over the the whole world. And we are looking forward to accompanying them on their journey. Some say rock is dead, but Madrugadas climbing popularity and undisputed success these last years is saying something completely different.
